Does the media have any chance of making you feel like you can trust them? I am tired of thinking that we are getting the whole story but not. The fractured nature of the media is a HUGE issue for me. I like to get the whole story and never do. The fractured nature of the media and the drama that they need to capture the viewer and thus bolster ratings. I say that they should just report the facts and let the public make up their own minds. Look at this article from soda head http://www.sodahead.com/united-states/do-you-trust-the-media/question-3241425/?link=ibaf&q=media+trust+united+states
Tell me what you think.
It will take a lot to repair the relationship between the media and the public. The simply answer is that it's difficult for the public to trust the media because they know how dishonest the media can be. How can you trust someone that you know with holds information and twists stories? From the media standpoint, they can start by responsible journalism and objective reporting but how likely is that ?
ReplyDeleteI think the media has more or less made its own bed regarding this issue. The idea that popular media outlets are simply corporate entertainment entities with little to no emphasis placed on accurate, fair reporting is gaining significant traction on every side of the political spectrum. In my opinion, the media will be totally unable to recuperate in the long-term unless the strategy of conflict/drama-driven narratives is totally abandoned in favor of at least a slight bit more importance placed on classical styles of journalism and a dedication to a simple reporting of the facts. It's also important to note the role of journalists as fact-checkers, something I've discussed in my blog, and something that journalists today seem to think is not part of their job description. When a media outlet will report simply anything a pundit spouts, anything a political activist says, and any distorted version of the facts, then a viewer's trust in them as a factual outlet is severely compromised, and for good reason.
